AI and Pakistani Freelancers 2026: Which Skills Are at Risk, Which Are Growing

Last updated: October 13, 2026

If you have started learning freelancing, you have probably heard both stories. One says AI is killing freelance work. The other says AI is making freelancers richer than ever. Which one is true for a Pakistani beginner?

Honestly, both are partly true. The work that is easy to copy is getting cheaper, and the work that needs judgement, specialisation or a human relationship is holding its value. This guide goes through the numbers and what you can do about it, without scaring you and without selling you a dream.

Please note: Most of the figures below come from global studies of freelance platforms, as reported by PhoneWorld in May 2026. They are not Pakistan-only numbers, and we have not checked the original studies ourselves. Use them as a direction, not as a forecast. We do not promise any income.

What the Numbers Say

Freelance demand changes: writing down 30 to 32 percent, developer jobs down 21 percent
  • Writing: A study of about two million job postings in 61 countries, by researchers at Harvard Business School, Imperial College London and the German Institute for Economic Research, found writing jobs fell about 30%. Another report on Upwork put the fall in writing projects at about 32% year over year in 2025.
  • Software and web development: down about 21% in the same study. Entry-level work was hit hardest. The share of entry-level projects on Upwork reportedly fell from 15% to below 9%.
  • Engineering roles: down about 10%.
  • AI-related work: Upwork’s 2025 report is quoted as saying freelancers on AI projects earn about 44% more per hour than those on non-AI projects.

The same article also quotes other figures (video editing up 39%, data entry down 13%) without naming a source, so we are not relying on them.

Why This Matters in Pakistan

Pakistani freelancers earned a record $1.76 billion last year, as we explained in our guide to Pakistan freelancer earnings. A lot of beginners also start in exactly the categories that AI affects first: basic content writing, simple design, data entry and routine translation. The PhoneWorld article says Pakistani freelancers are concentrated in the hardest-hit categories, but it gives no Pakistan data for that claim.

Which Skills Feel the Pressure?

Freelance skills under pressure from AI versus skills holding up

Under pressure

  • Basic content writing, such as generic articles and “About Us” pages
  • Routine translation
  • Data entry
  • Basic graphic design
  • Entry-level coding and simple websites

Holding up or growing

  • Video editing and production
  • Work that uses AI tools skilfully (editing, checking and improving AI output)
  • Strategy and consulting
  • Specialised knowledge: legal, medical, technical or financial content
  • Services built on trust and long-term client relationships

Four Moves That Help a Beginner

  1. Pick a niche, not just a skill. “Writer” competes with everyone and with AI. “Writer for dental clinics” or “editor of technical manuals” competes with far fewer.
  2. Use AI as your assistant. Let it draft, and you add the editing, facts, local knowledge and quality check. Always check every fact it gives you.
  3. Show real work. Build three sample projects. Clients hire proof, not promises. Our 30-day beginner plan shows how to start.
  4. Look for direct clients over time. Platforms are a good start, but relationships with your own clients protect you when the platform changes.

Learning AI Skills for Free

The PhoneWorld article mentions Coursera and Google’s AI courses, and a government programme called the National AI Advancement Initiative. We did not verify the programme’s details, so check the official announcement before you sign up anywhere. Never pay a stranger who promises an “AI course with guaranteed income”.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AI going to end freelancing in Pakistan?

The data shows pressure on routine, entry-level work, not the end of freelancing. Specialised and AI-assisted work is holding up better.

Should a beginner still start freelancing?

Yes, if you pick a skill carefully, build proof and stay patient. Avoid skills that are only about producing generic text or simple designs quickly.

Which skill is the safest?

No skill is completely safe. Skills that combine judgement, specialised knowledge and client relationships tend to be more resistant than skills that are mostly repetitive output.

Are these numbers about Pakistan?

No, most of them are global platform data. Treat them as a direction.

Final Words

The people who suffer most are those who compete on price with a machine. The people who do well use the machine and add what it cannot: judgement, trust and local knowledge. For more online earning in Pakistan guides, keep visiting EarnExpertHub.
