Use this free typing speed test to check your words per minute (WPM) and accuracy before a clerk or data entry test. Choose English text or a data entry style test, pick 1, 2 or 3 minutes, and start typing. It works on your phone or computer, and nothing you type is saved.
This is a practice tool. Speed rules for a job are set by the department and written in its advertisement. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.
How the Typing Speed Test Works
- Choose the test type: Clerk uses office-style English paragraphs, and Data entry uses names, codes and numbers.
- Choose the time: 1, 2 or 3 minutes.
- Click the typing box and start. The timer begins with your first key.
- Correct letters turn green and mistakes turn red, so you can see errors as you type.
- At the end you see your net WPM, gross WPM, accuracy and correct characters.
What Is Net WPM and Gross WPM?
- Gross WPM counts everything you typed. Every 5 characters count as one word.
- Net WPM counts only the characters you typed correctly. This is closer to what most typing tests use.
- Accuracy is the share of typed characters that were correct.
The level labels on this page (Beginner, Average, Good, Very good, Excellent) are only a practice guide. They are not an official standard. Departments set their own speed rules, so always read the advertisement for your post.
Tips to Improve Your Typing Speed
- Practise 15 to 20 minutes every day instead of one long session.
- Focus on accuracy first. Speed comes when your fingers learn the keys.
- Look at the screen, not the keyboard, and keep your wrists relaxed.
- Learn the home row keys (A S D F and J K L 😉 and use all ten fingers.
- For data entry, practise numbers and capital letters separately.

Frequently Asked Questions
What typing speed is needed for a clerk job in Pakistan?
It depends on the department and the post. Some advertisements state a required speed and some do not. Check the original advertisement and do not rely on unofficial numbers.
Is my typing saved?
No. The test runs in your browser and nothing is sent or stored.
Why is my net WPM lower than my gross WPM?
Net WPM removes wrong characters. Typing a little slower with fewer mistakes usually gives a better net score.
Does this test Urdu typing?
Not yet. This version tests English text and numbers.
